Infection Control in Hospitals: Back to Basics

Why discuss it now?

After the COVID-19 pandemic, awareness of infection-control measures rose for everyone. Yet figures show hospital-acquired infections still affect about 7% of admitted patients, causing a heavy health and economic burden.

The five golden rules of hand hygiene

  • Before touching the patient.
  • Before clean or aseptic procedures.
  • After potential exposure to body fluids.
  • After touching the patient.
  • After touching the patient's surroundings.

Other equally important practices

Correct use of personal protective equipment, environment disinfection, IV-line and catheter management, and rational antibiotic use — together they reduce hospital-acquired infections.

The simplest practice in medicine — handwashing — is also the most life-saving.
